The clump-forming, hardy evergreen bamboos are ideal as screening, informal hedging, infill or background plants. Unless otherwise stated they will do best in a sunny, sheltered position where the soil is not too dry. The potential height shown will only be achieved in ideal conditions.

 
Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima' (Running bamboo) [489]
The smooth thin culms carry variegated light green and cream leaves.
Phyllostachys aurea (Golden bamboo, fishpole bamboo) [29]
Potential height up to 8m. Light green leaves are carried on green culms which will turn yellow by their second season if exposed to the sun.
Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectablilis' (Golden groove bamboo) [490]
Potential height up to 8m. 
Light green leaves are carried on culms which can be orangey-purple in spring then changing to yellow and which have internodes alternately striped in green.
Phyllostachys nigra (Black bamboo) [30]
Potential height up to 8m. Light green leaves are carried on green culms which will darken and turn black by their second season if exposed to the sun.
Pseudosasa japonica (Arrow bamboo) [31]
Potential height up to 5m. Broader mid-green leaves on dense-growing, very straight culms. Can be grown indoors.
