Betula (Birch)

Betula (Birch) [36]
Fully hardy deciduous trees and shrubs which develop attractive bark for all-year-round-interest. Appreciate a sunny position in good moist but well-drained loamy soil. The mid-green foliage usually takes on yellow tints for the autumn.

B.pendula 'Long Trunk' [39]
This tree shares the weeping characteristic of B.p. 'Youngii' but the foliage and striking white bark which develops is more like B.utilis.
B.pendula syn B.alba (silver birch) [352]
The small leaves and drooping growth habit combine to give this species a graceful appearance. The bark develops a silvery look fissured black as the tree matures.
B.pendula 'Youngii' (Young's weeping birch) [353]
Forms a lovely dome-shaped tree with thread-like branches making it an ideal subject for a lawn. In time the bark becomes white and is fissured black as the tree matures.
B.utilis (Himalayan birch) 'Doorenbos' (syn.B.utilis var.jacquemontii) [40]
This variant carries slightly larger leaves than it's silver cousin but has the most striking white bark which comes into it's own as an interesting feature for the winter months.
