Catalpa bignonioides (Indian bean tree) [51] A hardy deciduous tree which in this form makes a compact rounded-head. Will do well in ordinary garden soil and in a sunny, sheltered position. Has bright green, heart-shaped leaves. The fragrant, white, yellow and purple marked, foxglove-like flowers appear in late summer. These are followed by long, slender seed pods.
C.b.'Aurea' [492] The leaves of this variant are bright yellow in spring, becoming paler later. Develops a globular-shaped head.
